SFTHU Quick Reviews: Motorpsycho's Self-Titled Album: Sonic Theater at its Best

I am so enamored, captivated, and fascinated with this beautiful thing that I barely know where to begin or direct the resulting outpour of thoughts that I have about it, but I'll try to be as terse as possible (always a monumental challenge for me when I'm talking about music). Just know that I love this so much I could cry.

I'm sure many of you are well aware of Motorpsycho, an avant-garde progressive rock group from Norway who got their start in 1989 and are still going strong today. Known for their mind-bending, eclectic, and often downright experimental take on prog rock, Motorpsycho incorporates psychedelic, alternative, folk, heavy rock, jazz, country, and heavy metal textures (to name a few) into their ever-evolving sound. The band has released a slew of music over the years and have recently resurfaced as a duo composed of founding members Bent Sæther and Hans Magnus Ryan to release a monumental double album, which saw that light of day on February 21, 2025.

Motorpsycho's Self-Titled Album (2025)

This self-titled epic has a fabulously sophisticated composition that will mentally seat you before the most captivating theater performance, complete with engaging main acts, a mix of soothing and delightfully peculiar interludes, and mysterious B-plots. Additionally, the inclusion of sweet but heavy pop rock anthems such as Stanley (Tonight's the Night) really set the album apart, appealing to a wide variety of heavy music fans. The vehicle for the primary story is, of course, Motorpsycho's signature brand of prog, which is always both futuristic and comfortingly retro, incorporating elements of 70s heavy rock, space rock, jazz, proto metal, and above all, an immeasurable number of elaborate twists and turns that propel the listener on a most immersive mind flight.

The most impressive part to me, however, is that Motorpsycho still retains an incredible store of creative ideas after all these years, proving without a doubt that their capacity to craft one of the cleverest versions of progressive rock I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. This is a band that's already stood the test of time, and isn't planning on going anywhere anytime soon:

"Let me dream all my nights away
Let me sing what I cannot say
Let me peel al the years away
What I was is all I have today
And I will bounce back
And make my comeback
'Cause it ain't over
Until it's over."

- lyrics from The Comeback
