A Match Made in Millennial Heaven: Good Day Father Releases Debut Single "Sonic Amadea"

After reporting on the underground stoner/doom scene for a few years now, it's safe to say that I've grown some roots there. However, grunge and alternative rock will always be the genres that hold my heart, as they're ultimately what paved the way toward heavier music for me and, more importantly, they have a particular ability to resonate with me on an emotional level. So, I'm delighted to have a rare bit of exciting alternative rock news today!

If you came of age around the same time as yours truly, you might remember the group Catherine Wheel from the 90s. This evocative alt rock band from Britain is best known for their albums Chrome (1993) and Ferment (1992). You might also recall the band Belly, fronted by Tanya Donelly and best known for their song Feed the Tree. As luck would have it for us millennials, Tanya Donelly and Brian Futter (former guitarist of Catherine Wheel) have collaborated on a new project called Good Day Father. The band just dropped their debut single Sonic Amadea, a track that is obviously honed from the stuff of the 90s but features just as much contemporary sophistication.

While Sonic Amadea has a base of shoegaze and dreampop, it's not all gauzy, heavy-eyed atmospheres and whimsy. These soft elements work to soothe and hypnotize the listener before some razor sharp, soaring guitar tones pierce through the dreamy canopy like the sobering morning sun at your window. This is the opening through which Tanya's seraphic voice directly infiltrates the listener's heart and soul, providing an anchor of security as the emotional pull of the song crescendos.

Lyrically, Sonic Amadea delivers a similar tug-of-war, an internal struggle with the decision to attempt to save another or to save oneself. Ultimately, these relatable words contain a stanza that I would seriously consider having engraved on my tombstone:

"Sonic Amadea
Happy that I dance alone
Playing out my tunes
Knowing that I can go on..."

All in all, Sonic Amadea delivers a promising first impression of Good Day Father, offering up a cathartic combination of mesmeric sonic reverie and deep introspection. I can't wait to hear what's next from this group.
