Late to the Party: Fuzziebär - "Die Gedanken sind Brei"
Fuzziebär ("fuzzy bear"/"fluffy little bear" in English) is a band from Brunswick Germany who got their start in 2012. Historically, the band's sound has built upon a strong foundation of classic, ultra-fuzzy stoner with strong influences of punk and psychedelic rock. Fuzziebär keeps their often witty lyrics in their native German language, but the vocals are anything but silly, moving deftly between melodic, soulful harmonies and punky grit.
In the band's own words:
"Fuzziebär is like a car accident: noisy, frightening, but in slow motion it looks just awesome! After discovering America in 1492, Fuzziebär was the first rock band playing a concert on the moon in 1969. Most important influences are beer and Lego, but most of all Devo and the Catina Band. Although, all of Fuzziebär’s members live in bear caves trying to raise bears with laser eyes and chainsaw-arms to rule the world, Fuzziebär is looking forward to found the "United Federation of the Planets" in 2162. But until that is going to take place, they try to spread hysteria with something they call music - but in the regions of the Outer Rim it’s better known as "Bring back the Punch“-Stoner".
The trio has released several works to date: a demo in 2013, Live at Radio Gugu in 2016, Lauch- und Krachgeschichten ("Tales of Fun and Mayhem") in 2015, Grober Unfug ("Utter Nonsense") in 2020, and most recently, the Die Gedanken sind Brei ("My Thoughts are a Jumble") EP in 2024. This latter release will be our focus here.
Fuzziebär - Die Gedanken sind Brei
Die Gedanken sind Brei is composed of three memorable tracks:
1.) Ellenbogen, an infectious song filled with buoyant and hooky, classic stoner sounds. This relatable track reminds us that the seemingly endless cycle of everyday life - work, watching tv, sleeping, and getting up - is ultimately just "shit".
2.) Die Gedanken sind Brei, where a doom-laden stoner psych intro flows into atmospheric oases and hypnotic, trippy riffs are adorned with stirring vocal harmonies and...
3.) Reproduktion, a spectacular coming-together of the previous two tracks, as open and malleable psychedelia dances in harmony with coarse, barreling stoner. This is the most dimensional track on Die Gedanken sind Brei, where the layers of Fuzziebär's sound are most clearly discernible.
Final Thoughts
On Die Gedanken sind Brei, Fuzziebär utilizes a slightly cleaner, freer sound in comparison to their previous releases. Rather than detract from the band's trademark fuzzy riffs, this newfound brightness ultimately highlights them while carving a plethora of colorful new facets across the three tracks. In spite of making liberal use of atmospheric psychedelic interludes, Fuzziebär's energy is never dampened, and their punk rock spirit integrates beautifully into the kaleidoscopic tones. Most of all, the radiant vitality, irresistible catchiness, and fun spiritedness of Fuzziebär's music is quite possibly at their highest points yet on Die Gedanken sind Brei, making these songs guaranteed hits at any live show.
I can't wait to see what these fuzz heads have in store for the future!
