Kant - "Echoes of Unfortunate Times"
Kant is a heavy psych quartet formed in Aschaffenburg, Germany whose kaleidoscopic music is heavily influenced by the sounds of the 60s and 70s along with notes of doom, heavy metal, and experimental rock. The band released their debut album When The Strangers Come To Town in 2023, a delightfully trippy collection of songs saturated with retro psychedelic tones. This was quickly followed by Kant's sophomore album Paranoia Pilgrimage in 2024, a noticeably darker release that dove headfirst into proto doom and occult rock inspirations. Now, the band returns with Echoes of Unfortunate Times, an album that, through the lens of a more moderns spin on psychedelia, doom, and krautrock, sees Kant exploring "fear of the future." And, while this relevant topic can certainly be a bit anxiety-inducing, frontman Marius Seidel assures us that Echoes of Unfortunate Times is "the most honest and emotional album we have written so far."
Kant - Echoes of Unfortunate Times
The album begins with the lush and expansive title track, marked by invigorating surges of intensity, soothing psychedelic interludes, and a wealth of beautiful, moving, interconnected pieces. From here, Echoes of Unfortunate Times moves into the "meat" - a series of songs that vacillate among punchy energy, vibrant groove, paranoia-laced frenzy, and hazy trepidation. For me, the songs Avalanche, Digital Beam, and When I Close My Eyes stand out strongly as main idea pieces, perfectly capturing the frenetic mania that results from prolonged cohabitation with fear.

Final Thoughts
I would argue that the darkness Kant unearthed on their previous album Paranoia Pilgrimage still formidably looms over Echoes of Unfortunate Times, just in a different form: existential dread. The sharper, more modern sound Kant utilizes around this grimness is the perfect sonic paintbrush with which to paint scenes of maddening tension, apprehension, and edginess - feelings that are often all too familiar in our chaotic, unstable world.
Echoes of Unfortunate Times was released on October 23, 2026 via Sound of Liberation Records.
