Satanic Youth Club Releases "Sex Tape" EP

Did that title get your attention? Awesome. Now that you're here, let me tell you about Satanic Youth Club, an underground band from Gothenburg, Sweden. This band has been making quality tunes since 2021-ish, and released their latest EP, Sex Tape, on February 16, 2024. Like many of the bands I write about here, Satanic Youth Club is delightfully difficult to categorize, and has a knack for incorporating elements of multiple genres into their music. Either way, they certainly march to the beat of their own alternative drummer. To explain further, let's dive into a track-by-track breakdown of the Sex Tape EP:

Sex Tape

Sex Tape boasts four tracks of underground alternative goodness:

1. Sex Tape

The EP's title track bursts right out of the gate with some incredibly infectious, electric groove factor. The vocals, while incredibly smooth and delightful to the ears, are darkly tongue-in-cheek, reminiscent of bands like Butthole Surfers.

"Make a copy and please send it over
I thought that I looked nice
Make a copy and please send it over
I wanna show my wife
Make a copy and please send it over
Time to roll that dice
Make a copy and please send it over
We really need that spice
We need this and so do you"

The quality and depth of the vocals and instrumentals here are what sets Satanic Youth Club apart from other bitterly sarcastic alt rock bands; there's nothing flippant about the effort the band puts into their composition process. I also greatly appreciate the little growl utilized by the vocalist to punctuate the latter verses of the song, as well as a lovely synth and fuzz-drenched outtro. Oh, and there's some cowbell! Not only are you having a grand old time listening to these lyrics, waiting eagerly for what comes next in this sexy mini-drama, but you'll be dancing around to the sensual groove.

2. Dollar Yen Euro

This delightful little tune utilizes the same groovy garage background as Sex Tape, but this time, there's a palpable tinge of southern-fried blues. I can't help but be reminded of early Cage the Elephant with this one, but Satanic Youth Club kicks it up a notch with the fuzz factor and potent bass at the forefront of the song. There's also a rad music video for this one:

3. Protected fool

Protected fool kicks off the latter half of the EP, marking a big change in pace. We go from some upbeat, danceable tracks to some very dreamy songs, rounding things out in an incredibly thoughtful way. Lyrics transmute into something more serious and even a bit self-deprecating. I really found myself relating to the lyrics on this song. Adding to the slower pace, guitars are kept primarily acoustic, and there are some awesome vocal harmonies present, underlining the drastic change in direction and heightened emotion on Protected fool.

4. Beach

Beach, while maintaining the slower and dreamy change in pace and tone mentioned above, brings back that electric groove with the instrumentals and vocals that alternate between sounding rather apathetic, trance-like and dulcet. Seriously, what a phenomenal way to end the EP; this song is a perfect demonstration of everything Satanic Youth Club does best and what makes them unique.

Final Thoughts

Sex Tape had been waiting in my inbox (that doesn't sound right at all, does it?) during a very busy week for me, in the "I'll get to it ASAP" folder. I decided that my morning commute was a great time to listen to this one and check it off my to-do list. Well, I was so blown away by these four songs that, as soon as I got to my destination, I immediately sat down and wrote this blog post. Sex Tape is right up my alley with not only its infectious alternative/garage sound, but also with its tone. I love the inclusion of both a darker form of sarcasm and intoxicating groove as well as a more serious yet delightfully lackadaisical feel. To be honest, that essentially describes me as a person in addition to the way I like my music, so of course I fell in love with it. That being said, I'm sure Satanic Youth Club will appeal to alternative rock fans of all kinds, but I also think the fuzzy garage grooves they bring will prick the ears of stoner rock fans as well.

This is a band I will definitely be following!
