Best New Releases August 2026

 

I'm back with another short list to wrap up this August, but let's face it: the summer months can be notoriously slow when it comes to new releases, and to be honest, I'm only just now coming out of vacation mode! Either way, what this list lacks in quantity, it certainly makes up for in quality! 

Here are my top five favorite albums from August 2026, in descending order: 

5.) Petrosa - Roadburn Chronicles 

Italian stoner/doom quartet Petrosa utterly dazzles with their debut album Roadburn Chronicles. While many elements of the album are undeniably bold, featuring an impressive showing of rich, expressive vocals, extraordinary guitar chops, sinister stoner/doom-style bass, and relentlessly crashing drums, Petrosa is all about striking a balance. Although their sound has electrifying energy and a noticeably tenacious bite, the band counters this with an equal amount of soul, ultimately creating an emotionally charged album that's all about the treacherous "journey through the human condition". Gripping from start to finish, Roadburn Chronicles makes a memorable first impression on both the ears and souls of heavy music fans.

4.) 10,000 Years - Esox Lucifer

For their fourth album Esox Lucifer, Swedish stoner metallers 10,000 Years descend from the crushingly dense atmospheres of interstellar wastelands into the noticeably more open, protean realm of progressive sludge. Much like masters of the genre High on Fire, 10,000 Years delivers punishing riffs that stay nimble with the help of the intricacies of heavy metal. Coarse and biting stoner metal also shows up strongly, darting in and out of the album with electric energy. Complex and impassioned swells of intensity keep Esox Lucifer fluid and kaleidoscopic, as it plays out in an ever-shifting, cinematic manner, gripping the listener tenaciously from start to finish. However, in line with bands such as Baroness, Kylesa, and Torche, 10,000 Years peppers their sound with melodic movements that strain with raw emotion, adding a different kind of intensity to the mix.

Esox Lucifer is undoubtedly 10,000 Years' most ambitious work to date, relentless in both weight and feeling: pure catharsis.

3.) Kuyper - The Great Belt 

Kuyper is a trio from Itzehoe, Germany who draws upon their passion for stoner rock on a broad scale, including its offshoots and amalgamations in their larger-than-life sound. Their debut EP The Great Belt is a collection of five songs clearly fashioned by a group of musicians with a profound love and respect for stoner rock and its subgenres. You'll hear nods to stoner/desert, psychedelic, space, and heavy rock with a strong backbone of southern-leaning heavy blues. And, while big names such as Kyuss, Fu Manchu, and Truckfighters will certainly float around your mind as you listen, the best part of The Great Belt is it still projects a strong, independent identity.

With a knack for playing a wide variety of ultra-infectious stoney sounds in a palpably spirited way, Kuyper is poised to become a mainstay in the heavy underground scene - not just in their home country of Germany, but on a global scale.

2.) GrimeStone - Killing Floor

GrimeStone is an occult rock quartet from Nova Scotia whose sound is alternatively dominated by proto doom or heavy rock swagger. To this, the band adds well-timed surges of trippy psychedelia and heavy metal theatrics, adding color, dimension, and energy to an otherwise deliciously dark sound. GrimeStone's debut album Killing Floor will entice you with the aforementioned flavors, but you'll ultimately be blown away by its variety. Surprises come with the unexpectedly soulful interludes amid the spooky grooves of fifth track End Times, and a sudden burst of garage punk attitude makes an appearance on the following song Liver Lake. However, final track GrimeStone is undoubtedly the standout composition. It slows things down to a mind-bending crawl before leaning increasingly hard into soaring and impassioned heavy rock jams, resulting in the most emotionally expressive track on the album. 

Although they seemingly came out of nowhere, GrimeStone proves they're a band with staying power with Killing Floor, leaving a lasting impression with their modern spin on a variety of vintage heavy sounds.

1.) Daily Thompson - Glue 

On their previous album Chuparosa, Daily Thompson utilized more of a classic stoner sound, celebrating the influence of greats such as Fu Manchu and Kyuss while ensuring that their individuality shone through at the same time. Their new album Glue, on the other hand, is all Daily Thompson, all heart. Not only does this release build upon the band's signature stoney grunge, but it takes their authentic, impassioned sound to the next level. Between the infectious grooves of Glue, raw emotion soaks through, permeating the listener's heart and soul. This level of emotional intensity leaves no question that each and every note and word comes from a deep, intimate place. 

In an age where technology and AI are unabashedly infiltrating the creative process, Glue makes an impactful statement by boldly keeping the raw emotion and humanness in the art of songwriting. However, I think the message the band intends to send here is even simpler and infinitely more powerful:

"Love is all you need"

It's the "glue" that holds us together.
